The Cumbria Socks are more than just a pattern—they’re a romantic ode to the serene beauty of the Cumbrian coastline. Inspired by the charming seaside town of Maryport, these socks are a heartfelt reflection of peaceful walks along the shore, the gentle lapping of waves, and the soft glow of the sunset over the sea.
Knitting these socks is like weaving together cherished memories of quiet moments by the water, where time slows down and the world feels just a little bit more magical. The intricate lace stitches and textured patterns evoke the natural beauty of the coastline—rolling waves, sandy beaches, and the soft whisper of the sea breeze.
Whether you’re wearing them on a chilly evening or curling up with a book by the fire, the Cumbria Socks wrap your feet in warmth and love, just like the embrace of a comforting memory. Let these socks carry you to your favorite coastal hideaway, where you can dream, unwind, and let the world drift away.

Make double stitch, is used
in the German short row heel. To make the double stitch,
slip next stitch purlwise with the yarn at the front onto right
hand needle, tug on the working yarn tightly & lift it up &
over the needle pulling the stitch with it. If your next stitch
is a purl bring the yarn back to the front & carry on. If the
next stitch is a knit, hold the yarn at the back firmly & carry
on.
When you come to the section of the heel where it instructs
to knit/purl the ds – double stitch, you knit/purl these as
one stitch.
